Sichuan Provincial Planning Commission and Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Foundation were established. In December 2001, the laboratory was officially approved as the Key Laboratory of Reproduction and Protection of Endangered Animals in Sichuan Province. In 2003, "Post-doctoral Research Workstation" was established. In 2007, Sichuan Key Laboratory of Endangered Wildlife Conservation Biology - Ministry of Provincial Government jointly established the National Key Laboratory Cultivation Base.

According to the needs of in-situ and ex-situ conservation of giant pandas and the advantages of laboratories, Sichuan Key Laboratory of Conservation Biology of Endangered Wildlife intends to focus on four directions: protection and management of giant panda national parks; breeding and breeding; genetic resources and population protection; and prevention and control of major diseases.

As for the research team, there are 81 regular staff in the laboratory, including 44 researchers, 26 laboratory technicians and 11 managers; 125 mobile staff, including 2 postdoctoral students and 123 interns.
